I am still here, honest
If I seem to have been more than usually quiet, it's just the result of a weekend away in London followed by coming straight back to a busier than normal teaching week.

Also, though I normally have mobile internet access when I'm away from home, I was unaware that Vodafone had recently changed the way they charge for mobile broadband, so the dongle didn't work. :( I was therefore reduced to the free 30 minutes of WiFi offered by the hotel which, due to reasons too complicated and boring to explain, could only be accessed with the iPod.

I really need to re-examine my mobile computing solutions now I'm no longer teaching online, especially as the Asus Eee is showing its age. I'll be eligible to upgrade my mobile phone in a couple of weeks and the answer is probably just to get a proper smartphone which will replace both the dongle and the little point-and-shoot camera, which is now about 9 years old. Anyway, I have a plenty of time to solve these problems before I go away again for longer than a day out.

Otherwise, I thought I'd mention that I've decided to go to Worldcon in August. I'm planning to do what I did for the London Eastercon, namely stay somewhere cheap away from the convention site and just commute in each day. I used to like staying up late talking in the bar, but I get peopled out very quickly these days, not to mention tired! I haven't worked out all the details yet, but in principle, I'll be going so I hope to see a lot of my old friends there.

Current Mood: tired tired

Helen - Inamac and I live in Chigwell and we are also commuting in to the con, probably by taxi. We have a spare room and a put-you-up bed (which is comfortable - I slept on it last night) if you want to consider it. By bus and tube and DLR we are about forty minutes from the con site if the taxi isn't convenient. If you're not interested we won't take offence, but we might at least offer.

Thank you ever so much for the kind offer of your spare room. I hope you won't be offended if I decline, but I do find large numbers of people very stressful and to cope with big conventions like a WorldCon, I need a bolt hole where I can be completely on my own.

I will probably stay at one of the LSE halls of residence which are very good value. Also, because most of the rooms are singles, I don't have to pay over the odds to get a single room like I do in a hotel.

I haven't worked out all the details yet, but I'll probably start booking things this weekend now I've definitely decided to go. I look forward to meeting you and Inamac there -- assuming I can find all the people I know. There were people at Glasgow that I wanted to see but never managed to find and someone said this could be the biggest world con ever!

No probs, as I said originally.

Hope to see you at the con...

That sounds like a fun trip you are planning! I like the idea of staying away from the crowds too. That makes me tired, the down time is nice.

It will be good to see you. And it should be a good con, too. It's a very nice facility for a Worldcon.

It will be good to see you again too. Now Dad is settled in the care home and the bungalow is cleared and sold, I finally feel able to plan a bit further ahead.

We've wandered around the Docklands area and it will be easy to get to on the DLR, so I'm looking forward to it now I've definitely made up my mind to go.

Glad you're going to Worldcon. See you there.

I'm just hoping that I'll be able to find people. I know there were people at Glasgow that I wanted to see but never managed to find and someone said this could be the biggest world con ever!

But never fear! I will find you and Charlie because I've met you before. It's the people I don't know by sight that are harder to spot. Badges are only useful from a few feet away.

There is free wifi throughout the Loncon 3 venue. Which should help everyone with a smartphone or other small portable device to find each other while there.

Hopefully I'll see you there at some point.

Tina will be there as well - and I'll be with John and Sara Moran. I think you met them at Eastercon 2012. I think Charlie is hoping to be there but she said a lot depends on her dad's situation.
