Padlock keyhole by Helen in Wales
Padlock keyhole, a photo by Helen in Wales on Flickr.

11/52 for the group 2014 Weekly Alphabet Challenge

This week's theme was: K is for Keyhole

To be honest, this keyhole in a padlock on an old barn looks pretty gunged up. I have no idea whether you'd actually be able to unlock it. It would certainly need a bit of a clean and a squirt of oil.

Also, I just thought I'd mention that a few minutes ago, when I came to post this photo from Flickr, I received this message.

"We are deprecating the support for sharing to LiveJournal on 3/25."

*Sigh!* I know that LiveJournal is no longer as popular as it once was and I know that I can copy and paste the HTML, but it was so convenient being able to post direct from Flickr.

I went to the relevant thread in the Flickr forum and left a message saying how sad I was that such a useful feature was being discontinued.

I also pointed out that "deprecate" doesn't mean what they seem to think it means. What the message should have said was "We are terminating the support for sharing to LiveJournal on 3/25." They've obviously been deprecating it for ages, ie (according to my dictionary) arguing or protesting against it.

Hmm. I don't think I've ever used that feature (I just cut-and-paste the HTML), but it's yet another ominous sign. I've been using Facebook more and more lately, which is a shame because the value per post is much lower than it is with lj.

I have been using Facebook more recently, but I refuse to post photos there. The changes to Flickr have been driving serious photographers away, which has spoiled what used to be a really good place to share and comment on photos. Just getting "Faves" doesn't help you improve as a photographer and encourages people to be lazy and click a button instead of saying something meaningful. There are plenty of places on the web that already cater for this more casual approach. Flickr used to be different.

And the HTML they provide these days is a fancy embed code that doesn't work everywhere, as I discovered recently when I tried to share one of my fractal images on a forum. (Someone on the forum pointed out that I could just link to the appropriate-sized image from All Sizes, and I guess that's OK if you put in the link to the photo page by hand, but that's a lot of fiddling about.)

I haven't used the LJ option for ages, as I always crosspost from Dreamwidth and it never quite worked there, but I'm sorry it's going away.

As long as you stay with the old version of Flickr and don't change to the "new experience", then you can still get the HTML code. The "new experience" version gives some iframe thing that doesn't work in many places, including the comment threads in Flickr! :(

I have found it challenging lately to even get photos from my own computer onto LJ.

I love your photo!

Thanks. It is almost 7 years since I joined Flickr and I'm not putting as much time and effort into my photography as I did initially, but if I stopped doing my weekly photos, I'd get out of practice. Besides, I enjoy looking back over my photos.

What a great picture that is! I could see it on the cover of a mystery or even a horror.

Also, yes, "deprecate" does not mean what they think it means :)

Thanks. I find that these weekly challenges make me take photos that I wouldn't normally take, my default generally being pretty landscapes. :)

I can see from coth's reply below that "deprecate" has taken on a technical meaning. I really wish they wouldn't do that with words, especially where there are much clearer words they could have chosen. Not everyone on Flickr is a first language English speaker.

I'm sorry about Flickr making it harder to do what you do - I enjoy what you do.

I'm afraid that deprecate is a perfectly good English word with a general meaning that has been taken to be technical jargon, and the jargon usage is now beginning to crowd out the original meaning. A very normal process, unfortunately.

It's not that much harder, but it is an extra step and when you're busy, that can sometimes make the difference between posting and not posting. :(

I did wonder if "deprecate" had taken on a technical meaning. I really wish they wouldn't do that with words, especially where there are much clearer words they could have chosen. Not everyone on Flickr is a first language English speaker.

Am I the only one to spot the hairpin? ;)

Well, that stinks! I did notice that you couldn't post to LJ from the "new experience" so I switched back. But who knows how long that will last?

I love word-nerdery! And will be stealing the keyhole idea :)

It does look as if maybe something is broken within the lock--maybe an old key, even.

Regarding Flickr and LJ, you wouldn't have thought it would be so hard to maintain permission for sharing. I wonder if--this is paranoia speaking, I suppose--they're afraid of something happening what with all the stuff going on in Ukraine. I wonder if being open to LJ represents a security risk for Flickr….
