Door to the bat cave
10 ~ Door or doorway
For the group 52 in 2014

I don't normally walk round the back of the college, but on a whim, because it was sunny, I went that way today last Thursday and did a double-take as I passed this door.

Bats! Not in the belfry but in the old disused cellar that housed the boiler for the heating. It is now out of bounds because bats are protected by law.

I like the contrast of the old, worn door which looks like it hasn't been actually used in ages with the shiny new sign that says not to use it. :)

Apparently this is the cellar that used to house the old central heating boilers. (Presumably coke fired) When the college had a new heating system, they wanted to clear out this cellar and use the space for something else, but finding bats there put a stop to that idea.

What a cool shot, and I'm so glad the bats are protected.

That's not the cellar under the Wayne mansion, is it?

Having just googled to remind myself what Wayne Manor looked like, the old college building could just about pass itself off as the home of Batman, from the outside at least.

It was actually built as a Victorian girl's residential school and over the years G and I have variously referred to it as Gormenghast or Hogwarts due to the complexity and strangeness of the interior layout.

You can have taught there for years, only to realise that your new class is being taught in a room that you have no idea of how to find. It usually turns out to be through a door you have never previously noticed and then up a strange little staircase. :)

New Sign needed:

Bats dropping,
Dropping Bats,
Bat droppings,
Droppings Bat...

May be hazardous to your health!

Darn, the last one doesn't fit.

It could indeed be hazardous to one's health, but it's to preserve the bats' health that the sign has been put on the door. :) All bats are protected species in the UK and you can be fined lots of money just for disturbing them.
