Department of "I don't believe it!"
When I said that we get waves of scam callers, I didn't expect two in one morning!

However, I dealt with this one swiftly and efficiently by speaking Welsh to him. As we have caller display, the "International" gave him away and so I could start the conversation in Welsh right from the beginning. I wished him a "Bore da," (good morning) and he tried to launch into the usual spiel, but at the first pause I asked him politely (in Welsh) what he wanted. He ignored that and tried to continue for a little longer, but was clearly faltering by now, so when I explained, (still in Welsh) that I didn't want to speak English with him, he gave up.

So now I can tick "Say something in Welsh" off my daily to-dos. :)

This is an excellent idea. I should learn Älvdalska, or something.

I don't know whether the scammers speak any of the other major European/Scandinavian languages. The ones who pester us sound as if they're phoning from India, hence being able to speak English well. But I know I'm safe with Welsh and they probably don't even recognise what it is. :)

It amuses me anyway. If they're going to pester me, I may as well try to make use of the situation.

What a brilliant idea! Turn something irksome into an impromptu language practice session!

Exactly! And it amuses me. If they're going to pester me, I may as well try to make use of the situation.

That is great hee hee!! I am glad you could get in some Welsh! We get a lot of telemarketing calls and I decided that it is a perfect time to practice my Spanish, ;-)

Excellent idea! If they're going to be a nuisance, you may as well try to make good use of the situation.

what a clever idea! I wish I knew enough of another language to do the same. We get so many nuisance calls, mostly just as we are sitting down to supper. Perhaps I could just make up a language
But then, a police whistle blown into the mouthpiece has the same effect.:-)

You could use it as motivation to learn a few phrases in Klingon or Dothraki. :)

Indeed. I suppose it's karma. If we had never ruled India, they wouldn't speak our language well enough to plague us with phone calls. I'm sure a lot of people just shout rude things at them, but I like to disconcert them in more subtle ways if possible.
