Brugge, when I lived there, had a bylaw which stated that nothing must be up or on display before December the first.

Shame that commonsense doesn't seem to catch on here. :o(

Selling things like cards and gift wrap early makes sense because some people may need to send stuff abroad and prepare presents well in advance, but chocolates?!

Yes, that's exactly the law I've always said I wanted, nothing up until Dec 1. I don't think stores would even mind, as long as they knew it would be enforced on all the other stores too.

if you had Halloween celebrations like we do you could have had pumpkins etc. since the beginning of September : )

We are increasingly getting Halloween thrust upon us, but the Halloween stuff usually comes and goes quickly.

There is not any Xmas stuff out that I have seen but someone else here from the UK is noticing a lot of it too. We just see Pumpkins literally everywhere. I am so over pumpkin everything ;-)

I have bought two Christmas-related things from catalogs in the last week or so because I'd been wanting them and was afraid they'd be gone if I waited--a box of ornaments and a Venice-related Advent calendar (seems I collect those :-) ).

But nothing from a store display!

I have occasionally bought a present very early because I saw exactly the right thing. It's also true that people who need to spread the cost may start buying non-perishable things a few months in advance, but these organised souls know that Christmas is coming and don't need a poster to tell them!

It's really against all odds that one can really live in the moment. I mean I love Christmas and Christmas things but no. Not before our pumpkins in our accidental pumpkin patch by the driveway turn orange and can we savor the shades of green they turn in the weeks before the orange...
