Latest LJ is dooooomed hoo-ha
This is a Public Service Announcement:

Unless and until LJ goes tits up, I'm not moving over to DW. I'm certainly not backing up all my posts over there because it feel dishonest to pretend that's where I originally posted stuff. Fear not, I do have an offline backup using LJ Archive, which is good enough for me.

It seems, however, that at least some of my friends have decided to move to DW, with or without cross-posting. I do have an account on DW, though it is currently dormant, but if you want me to see things over there, can you please check whether you have given me access? I am heleninwales on DW too. I will try to remember to look in over there a couple of times a week, but it is Another Place To Check, and I'm at my limit with social media, especially since I was promoted to moderator on Habitica, which is now possibly my most important online home, closely followed by LJ.

If there is general movement DW-wards, I may consider cross-posting again. I've done it in the past, but it was tedious to keep it up. Right now I'm just planning to sit tight and see what happens, but if there is a huge influx of LJ-ians, especially a load of Russian bloggers, then I have my doubts that DW will be able to cope, so it might not prove to be the haven that people think it will be.

To be honest, if LJ does fold or become unusable, I'm more likely to move somewhere like Tumblr for blogging than cross over to DW, though ultimately, we will have to wait and see.

Current Mood: calm calm

We have mutual friendings on DW so you should be able t find my stuff if you need to. :o)

Thanks for confirming that. I know I have a lot of friends also friended on DW, but I've seen some people declaring their intention to move and I realised that not everyone has given me access and I'd lose touch if they stopped cross-posting.

Y're welcome!

I must be missing some hoohah somewhere -- where is the rumour that LJ is going tits-up?
heleninwales From: heleninwales Date: December 31st, 2016 02:00 pm (UTC) (Link)
The Russian company that owns LJ (and which has owned it for several years) has stopped using servers in America so LJ is now solely hosted in Russia. For some people this is a deal-breaker and they're transferring to DW.

Some people are predicting this will be the end of LJ, I'm not convinced and I will wait and see what happens before doing anything.

Ah. Well, I'm not sure that Russia is any worse than the States in the hosting regard -- we will have to wait and see (they're very sad souls if they want to sensor my stuff, and they're welcome to read it). . And I read people both here and there (although on the rare occasions I post, I post there because I can automatically set it to cross-post here).

As a Brit, both the US and Russia are foreign countries so I'm not that concerned either way. I don't post political stuff and I'm not likely to fall foul of Russian censors. My LJ is so mundane that anyone is welcome to read it. I never ever post anything online that I would be upset if it was made public.

I miss all the fun riots.

I'm hoping that things settle down again here on LJ after the initial flurry of panic over the servers moving to Russia. As a Brit, the servers are overseas either way and I'm so non-controversial that it doesn't really matter who is hosting my journal.

I haven't been using LJ for some time but that was a different reason and not because I was using another blogsite and yes I know some moved over to dw, but as you posted, that would be another place to check.
If I would feel that LJ is no longer a place to be, I don't feel that way now, than I might start a blog on wordpress.
I am using Wordpress for my german blog about our trips and hiking tours and I a quite pleased with it.
The only thing which what goes on my nerves with LJ is the problems with my LJ app, I can't login and if I can it says "no posts" for my friends list.

I would certainly consider Wordpress, though I do have a Blogger blog that I could do more with.

However, I'm hoping that things settle down again here on LJ after the initial flurry of panic over the servers moving to Russia. As a Brit, the servers are overseas either way and I'm so non-controversial that it doesn't really matter who is hosting my journal.

I am quite confused about this right now. I do not have my posts backed up anywhere else. When I started here on LJ in 2012, friends encouraged me to cross post from there.

I re-posted something today about it and a lot of my friends got upset.

What awfully upsetting times.

If you do just want a backup of your posts, then DW has a way of importing them. Personally I use LJ Archive which backs up my LJ onto my computer so I have an offline copy. It also makes my journal searchable. If I want to find an old post but can't remember when I wrote it, I can search the offline copy which then gives me the post and date I posted it.

I did import my posts to DW, I have an account there from years ago that I am trying to revive and figure out more about DW, it does seem clunky.

Now I have another issue and thought with LJ being entirely in Russian hands is their disrespect of copyright. You are not concerned about that with all your lovely photos? I often post original artwork, (not that it is that great), but it is the idea of it being lifted.
Still trying to figure out what to do.

Thanks for the info on LJ Archive!

I'm doing a bit of wait-and-see as to whether the remnants of my LJ circles succeed in taking root at Dreamwidth or whether it's simply the final disintegration of LJ-spawned community. I've had an account over there for several years, mostly just to stake out the user name. And I just did the "migrate my content over" thing. But since I've just recently set up automated cross-posting of my Alpennia blog (and there doesn't seem to be an equivalent Drupal plug-in for Dreamwidth at the moment) I'm kind of straddling the boat and the dock for now.

I've used my DW account intermittently but just never felt at home over there. I'm hoping that things settle down again here on LJ after the initial flurry of panic over the servers moving to Russia. Yeah, the whole OMG the servers are in Russia! thing kind of ignores how little geography means for the sort of cyber-problems they're thinking of.

I feel very much as you do, though I guess if LJ absolutely disappeared, I'd grudgingly go over to DW just because so many people I know are gathered there.
heleninwales From: heleninwales Date: January 4th, 2017 01:36 pm (UTC) (Link)
At the moment, if I read over there it's mostly duplication because people tend to cross-post. It's also yet another place to check. Personally I believe that LJ will outlast DW, but if it should so happen that LJ folded or abandoned its English language side (unlikely!), it would very much depend on who was still around on DW as to whether I made a permanent move there.

I'm actually hoping that things settle down again here on LJ after the initial flurry of panic over the servers moving to Russia. As a Brit, the servers are overseas either way and I'm so non-controversial that it doesn't really matter who is hosting my journal.

It doesn't bother me who hosts the site as long as they do it fairly. I do have a DW account but really can't be bothered with it. I'll see how it goes before making any rash decision.

Nothing to add to the comments already made, but I did subscribe to you on Dreamwidth and gave you access to my stuff.

I mostly cross-post from my self-hosted weblog so I expect all my stuff to be public from the get-go.
