Yellow car
7/52 for the group 2017 Weekly Alphabet Challenge

This week's theme was: G is for Game

If you're a fan of the BBC Radio 4 sitcom "Cabin Pressure", you will already be familiar with the game of "Yellow car". For those of you who aren't, here are the rules explained by John Finnemore in character as Arthur Shappey.

Basically, if you see a yellow car, you say, "Yellow car!". That's it. There are no points and no one wins. And once you start playing, you can never stop....

That reminds me of the game "Punchbuggy" that kids played here when my older son was young. When you're riding in a car and you see a VW Beetle, you lightly "punch" one of your fellow passengers and announce its color, like so: "Punchbuggy green!" The object is to be the first to notice it and do this. The trick (at least for me) is when the Beetle's owner has painted it in a variety of hippie colors and you get flustered by how to announce it.

It may have been that game or similar that inspired John Finnemore, who wrote as well as acted in, "Cabin Pressure". But in Yellow Car, you don't punch anyone, even lightly.

I think "Cabin Pressure" is my favourite radio comedy of all time and it can still make me laugh even though I must have heard the episodes at least 3 times now.

Oh! That explains the "Punchbuggy!" line in the movie "Lilo and Stitch". I always wondered what that meant.
