Story Title: A Necessary EvilWords written today: 275 Words now in Chapter 9: 8,637 Words total: 87,275 Reason for stopping: Needed to take advantage of the fine weather and do a bit of gardening. Mean things done to characters: Lots! Huw has just seen someone burned to death by the bad guy and now his fiancée has just told him she's marrying someone else. Other:Chapter 9, now standing at 8,637 words with a short funeral scene still to be added, desperately needs splitting into two. And then of course all the later chapters will need renumbering. Ho, hum... Otherwise I'm starting to get back into the story. I haven't actually rejoined novel_in_90 because I'm not writing enough words. However, I am writing enough to finish the draft by mid-December, so I may just go it alone this time. There was a bit more writing than the 275 words implies because I was also editing for mood. I discovered I had two versions of part of a scene, so I was splicing them together. One was fairly upbeat, the other definitely not, so the upbeat parts needed a light edit to bring the mood in line with the rest. Time to cook dinner now. Our neighbour had been given a tray of peaches and she couldn't use them all, so she offered the remainder to me. Quite a few were going squishy and/or mouldy, but I have salvaged the best and will be making a peach crumble. :) Tags: a necessary evil, writing, writing progress Current Mood: accomplished

The OU creative writing course is doing exactly what I wanted it to do. I'm writing again and becoming more critical but in a helpful way, not just the, "Oh, God this is crap, why do I bother?" way. Perhaps I should have said analytical rather than critical? Anyway, we had to write a couple of pieces from the POV of someone totally unlike ourself, so (not wanting to start yet more stories) I thought of Mark who is male, 25 years old, blond, blue eyed, 6 foot tall and fit and athletic. Also far more physically courageous than I ever was or will be. I am now considering shifting A Necessary Evil into first. What do you think? The extracts are behind the cut. ( just for those who are interested... )
In all its many incarnations, it's always been third person, but I am now tempted by first. It might be fun to try and this novel is likely to be unsaleable due to it being a terribly overused trope, but I would like to finish it, even if it only ends up on the Web. Words written today: 0 Total words in novel: Still stuck at 88,984 People killed: 0 Mean things done to characters: N/A After writing virtually nothing for over a week, I've shifted the deadline for finishing A Necessary Evil back to the original 31 May. Hence the new title of Finish that novel in 55!, which neither rhymes nor alliterates, so is useless as a snappy slogan. *g*
What we have done over the weekend, amongst other things, is book another holiday to the US. Wheee! I get a week in Boulder, Colorado, while G is attending a course there. So during the day I'll be able to potter around the shops and gentle walks to acclimatise to the heat and altitude. Then we go on to Estes Park for another 4 days together. Possibilities include hiring mountain bikes and horse riding. *g* We're hoping to see these ( Video links behind the cut... )Tags: a necessary evil, holidays, travel, writing progress Current Mood: amused

According to my spreadsheet, today was the 90th day for me. Unfortunately, I wrote 0 words today. :-( I had hoped to end with a bang, a last minute sprint, but I rather fizzled out due to exhaustion caused by the day job and various stressful life things. Never mind... I knew when I started that I wasn't going to achieve the full aims of novel_in_90, but looking on the bright side, I have written 40,463 words since the challenge began. I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't have written anything like that much if it hadn't been for Ni90. So for me it's been a huge success. My plans now are to take a short break from the novel for a couple of days while I'm attending Eastercon, then I need to set a new target in order to complete the last few chapters. My (self-imposed) deadline for completing the first draft was 31 May, and if I achieve that, it will largely be due to the support of everyone in the novel_in_90community. It really has been a great help. I hope it continues, even though the initial 90 days is up. Tags: a necessary evil, novel_in_90, writing progress Current Mood: tired but accomplished

Words written today: 1116 Total words in novel: People killed: 0 Mean things done to characters: The king is imposing crippling taxes on the north, which bore the brunt of the war. The Light Cavalry are Not Pleased. About half of the words were notes about what happens in the next couple of chapters, but they'll be incorporated/overwritten in due course, so I'm counting them.
I thought the novel had hit a sticking point. I create a story out of a number of key points, and one of them was that Mark has to stage a coup and depose the king.[*] I was at that point and you know what? He was just standing there, refusing to act. So I'm saying, "Right. Now you threaten the king with a pistol, shout a bit and have him put under house arrest." And Mark's looking at me with his eyebrows raised and an expression that says, "But why would I?" Unfortunately, he was right. My characters are always right about what they would and wouldn't do. After staring at the screen for a while, hoping that Mark would come up with a way round the problem, I went for a walk. And about 15-20 minutes of brisk walking later, the ideas begin to unstick. It all hinged on what the bad guy was doing behind the scenes, which I vaguely knew, but now I know exactly what he's up to. The coup needs just a little bit more setting up, and then the pieces should fall into place. Also Mark's not going to depose the king, not initially, he's going to put him into "protective custody". That's much more in character. Also it segues nicely into being genuine imprisonment and the story that goes around later on can make Mark appear much more calculated and brutal than he actually was. Oooo! I like it. *g* NOVEL IN 90 counting the days: 86/ 90 (96%)A NECESSARY EVIL: 1116 new words: A Necessary Evil88,430/ 110,000 (80%)
[*] Before anyone suggests that perhaps I should change the story, this is non-negotiable because book 2 is written and in book 2 he's in prison for doing this very thing. Tags: a necessary evil, novel_in_90, writing reflection Current Mood: accomplished and exercised
