But I need to learn from first principles!

If you want to know how to use a new piece of software, I recommend finding a Youtube video created by either a woman or an Indian chap. I've generally found that they'll explain everything very clearly from first principles. Why am I mentioning this? Well, I'm trying to learn how to edit videos (for my 2018 project!) and the official Shotcut help videos (which have a male American narrator) assume that you know all about video editing, but just need to know how to use this particular software. This would be fine if I'd spent years editing video with professional software and had just downloaded Shotcut for home use as it's open source and free, but as I'm a total newbie regarding video, this is not helpful.

The need to know how to edit video relates to my project for 2018, more about this tomorrow. :)
