I posted this as a comment on a friend's Facebook post, but thought I'd post it here too:

Regarding no longer being able to remember things as well as when we were younger, I've decided it's not necessarily that the memory is lost, but that the retrieval system is occasionally faulty. I always imagine Pratchettesque memory gnomes being sent off with a note to retrieve something from the archives. Sometimes they scurry away and come back immediately with the memory. At other times they get lost in the stacks, fall asleep for a while and finally turn up a couple of days later causing one to exclaim, "oh, I've just remembered that thing we were trying to remember..."
