Proverb of the week

The first of a new and possibly continuing series of Welsh proverbs.

A fynno iechyd, bid lawen He who would be healthy, let him be cheerful.

I happened to be looking through the Welsh proverb list in one of my dictionaries and spotted this one. It seems particularly relevant this week because in the Sesame, which is the Open University's magazine aimed at students, there was an article about how to be happier, including a 10 point check list of things to do to increase your happiness. Nothing earth shattering; just the usual sort of advice, but neatly encapsulated.

They're also mostly things that I'm trying to do anyway, apart from point no 2:

"Count your blessings. At the end of each day, reflect on at least five things you are grateful for."

So I'm giving that a try too, as part of a sort of non-theistic prayer/mini-meditation as I go to bed, just before I fall asleep. It may be coincidence, but I've woken up feeling more positive in the couple of days since adopting it.

User icon meme thingy

Via lots of people...

Look at your LJ userpics list. If you have fewer than 50 icons, pick every fifth one. If you have between fifty and seventy-five icons, pick every seventh one. If you have over seventy-five icons, pick every tenth one. If you have fewer than ten, pick all of 'em. List them on your LJ, and tell everyone exactly why you have it, why it's interesting to you, what significance does it have.

I'm actually going to cheat a little and post every third icon, just because that seemed about the right number. Collapse )
