Story Title: A Necessary Evil (aka The One About the War)
Words revised today: First part of Chapter 6
Words now in Chapter 6: 4579
Percentage reduction: 29%
Words total: 55,904
Reason for stopping: Need to prepare a lesson plan for Wednesday afternoon's digital photography lesson.
Other: More darlings bite the dust! In just a quick half an hour before getting ready for work, I've slashed almost 2000 words from Chapter 6. It's surprising how easy it is to cut things now I look at it again with a cold clear eye.

The question then arises, why didn't my critiquers at the time point out that my story was clinically obese? And the answer has to be: because they didn't know where the story was going ultimately, they couldn't know what was relevant and what wasn't.

See, the cut bits weren't badly written, and they were scenes that were important to the characters, but they just weren't contributing to the overall shape of the story.

I think I've finally grasped macro scale structure!

And I've also learned that, for me, I definitely shouldn't let people read things until they're finished.

Oh, you'll be pleased to hear that I have done a rough draft of a letter to an agent re Moving a Mountain. I'll let it sit overnight and polish and print it tomorrow.
