You just don't see them any more...

poliphilo is talking about rag and bone men, which triggered some memories...

In exchange for our old bits and pieces, the local rag and bone man used to give us those stones for finishing off newly washed front steps. You dipped them in water, rubbed them over the step and then finished it off by smoothing with a cloth.

Whenever my gran had just washed and donkey stoned hers, we (as family) weren't allowed to walk on it and had to enter the house in a flying leap to leave the front pristine.
