Things of sentimental value

shalanna is talking here about passing things on to the next generation.

I'm in two minds about the charm bracelets. One of the things I'm trying to work on is getting rid of my Sentimental Attachment to Things.

There was a big fire down in South Wales recently and a whole row of houses were so seriously damaged they had to be demolished. Several families lost everything. (I don't know whether they'd had time to grab a few precious possessions before being evacuated, but it can't have been much.) My blood ran cold when I heard about it.

However... no one was hurt and the things are just things. Buddhist teachings stress how everything is ephemeral, which I fully realise intellectually, but find it harder to grasp emotionally.

So on the one hand, I agree with shalanna that it seems a shame that families are just discarding things that ought to have sentimental value. On the other hand, I wish I could be more like them. I would have a lot less stuff in the house. :]
