Writing progress (somewhat belated update)

Story Title: A Necessary Evil
Words revised skimmed over and added to draft last Tuesday: 5449
Words total: 20,625
Other:

I decided against rewriting anything and merely invoked the Power Of the Pointy Brackets regarding the first scene. The comment says:

<<Change to Mark's POV and do a joining bit[1]with some highlights of the journey.>>

However, for the first time I feel this novel might have legs after all. It's taken until Chapter 4 for it to hit its stride, but I felt that the scene in the library where Mark and Huw meet the prince and the king did work. Hurrah! I feel somewhat heartened.

Also I decided this week to try using small cards to summarise each scene. I know I have various computer applications from Word's outline feature via an Excel spreadsheet to the BrainBox Mindmapping software, but I think it's worth experimenting with something that's actually tangible. I've been using flashcards to help me learn my Welsh and having something physical does seem to help. Anyway, we shall see...

[1] More correctly called a "narrative summary" :) What the first part of this chapter needs is a touch of what Ursula Le Guin calls in Steering the Craft "crowding and leaping".

Uncannily accurate

This is uncannily accurate -- apart from the "team player" bit. :)

My latest photographic project

The Flickr T189 group, which is the group founded by the OU students who did the first presentation of the OU's Digital Photography course, are taking on new challenges. Some of these are self-imposed, some are chosen from a list of suggestions. I chose my own challenge, which is:

My photos are usually empty of people, so my personal challenge is going to be self-portraits. This means that instead of wandering around hoping that something will catch my eye, I'll have to set up and create the shots.

So... My aim for this challenge is to end up with a collection of 10 photos of me or parts of me that I feel are strong images and that I'm happy with. I'm giving myself until the end of May 08 (ie 3 months) for the challenge.

I have a set for this project, which so far contains two photos...

I haven't progressed this any further today, other than to go for a walk to get the exercise regime underway again. I want the me I'm photographing to be a little more svelte and toned by May for the final stages of the challenge! Meanwhile, here's the first portrait that (after some fiddling in Photoshop!) didn't turn out too badly.

First tentative self-portrait

I would like to be able to take portraits of other people, but I feel embarassed asking people to pose and I'm very usure about getting decent results. So what better person to start on than myself? I have plenty of patience and as I'm totally unphotogenic, if I can take decent photos of me, then I can take decent photos of anyone. :)

Eowyn Challenge -- progress

Walking to Rivendell

Miles travelled today: 5
Miles travelled so far: 301
Miles still to go: 157
Percentage complete: 66%

I have done more than 300 miles! :)

Point reached on journey: Just set out from the camp on the fourth day out from Weathertop.

Where I really went...

I did my walk number 13. It's walk number 13 because I have a spreadsheet set up to record the Eowyn challenge milage and it uses a lookup table to automatically add the miles if I just type in the walk number.

It wasn't a very nice day: cold and blustery with occasional light showers of cold rain. It didn't look hopeful for photography, but I took my camera and managed to get a few decent shots.
