Department of Who would have thought it?

Apparently gladiators were not the lean, mean fighting machines portrayed in popular cinema. They were instead pudgy, mean fighting machines. They ate a mostly vegetarian diet and took calcium supplements to increase bone density.

From the illustration, they'd probably look more like a typical Rugby front row than Hollywood's ideal fighting man.

So if anyone out there is writing a historical novel set in Roman times, the article might be useful.

And then, after writing this post, I glanced out of the window to see what the weather was doing so I could choose the appropriate icon -- and grabbed my camera, because realised I needed to make another!

Low flying rainbow, full size

I had to go out to a meeting this afternoon, so didn't have time to post this photo to Flickr. The sky was totally overcast and there was steady fine drizzle, but the sun must have have managed to peep through in some way to create this lovely rainbow at treetop height.

I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like it before.

Low flying rainbow!

The meeting was about starting up your own business. The Welsh Assembly Government have these various schemes to help people set up as self-employed, but their central online booking system leaves something to be desired because the email I received clearly said it was from 1.00 - 4.00 pm, whereas the session was actually from 10.00 am - 3.00 pm!

Anyway, the marketing was in the afternoon, which was the part I wanted and after a useful session, my business idea is starting to come clearer. There is another session on Thursday, but I won't go to that one because it's just about profit and loss and cash flow, which I already know how to do from the years when we ran our own company. I will, however, go to next Tuesday's session on tax, National Insurance and legal issues which could be useful.
