Look at your LJ userpics list. If you have fewer than 50 icons, pick every fifth one. If you have between fifty and seventy-five icons, pick every seventh one. If you have over seventy-five icons, pick every tenth one. If you have fewer than ten, pick all of 'em. List them on your LJ, and tell everyone exactly why you have it, why it's interesting to you, what significance does it have.
I'm actually going to cheat a little and post every third icon, just because that seemed about the right number.
The default icon. When I first decided to start posting to LJ, it seemed that the thing to do was choose a username rather than use one's real name. At the time we kept rats and I would have liked something ratty, but of course all the decent rat based names had long gone. However, Welsh is exceedingly useful for usernames because there are far fewer Welsh speakers on the Net and therefore it's more likely that a nice name will still be available. "Rat" in Welsh is "big mouse", which was a little cumbersome, hence I chose llygoden, which is Welsh for "mouse". Then I simply Googled for a nice mouse picture to use as the default. My original idea was to have a whole set of mouse pictures, but after a while, I just started using photos and anything that seemed appropriate.
This is my favourite local lake, about 15 mins drive from here and the location for the TV mini-series Merlin starring Sam Neil as the wizard. I feel it's a calming picture. I use it a lot for general posts and comments.
These are the snowdrops a student gave me to plant in my garden. The photo was taken when they actually came up for a second time. The second of a seasonal set, the idea beign that I will have an icon for each month. The first was the May blossom.
My muse! I love this. Made for me by mjlayman's friend after I described by muse once on rasfc. Used for reflective posts about writing when one of the book title ones wouldn't be appropriate.
Again I'm going to cheat slightly. When I planned this post I had eighteen icons. Last night I re-uploaded the Christmas "Baaaa humbug!" sheep for the post about chocolate Father Christmases which has messed up the sequence. Putting them back means that we'd get another seasonal plant and a repetition of the muse, so I'm going to pretend they're not there, which brings us to...
This sign has gone now, but for some years there was a Dr Who exhibition in Llangollen. I had to drive through Llangollen on my way to Wrexham and was always amused by the Dalek on the sign. One day I managed to stop and grab a photo. Used for anything SF-ish.
Continuing the mouse theme, this one is for posts about music. Which I haven't been making, so the icon has only been used once so far in a comment. I ought to use it more.
The icon I made for the Work In Progress, the story I think of as "The One About The War" aka "The Grandfather's Axe of a Novel". That's because, whilst now being completely different, it is, somehow, the same story I first tried to write when I was 15 years old. Used for writing progress posts.
