It did occur to me today that there is a much better motivation for Huw to keep his magical abilities secret than the one I'd used in the previous version of this story.
If the Temple find out he can do magic, they'll whip him out of the army and into their ranks before he can blink. And then he won't be able to help his comrades fight Kararl, because the Temple insist absolutely that magic can only be used for constructive and peaceful purposes. The fact that Huw can't actually use magic to hurt anyone is beside the point. They'd shut him away and that would be that.
I think I'm getting the hang of the Donald Maas thing about Upping the Stakes.
Otherwise it just was a case of turning a fairly long, non-scene chunk of narrative into a much shorter narrative transition. Sometimes telling is better than showing. *g*
