The role of pets

poliphilo has posted here about pets as baby substitutes. By coincidence,I had come to a similar conclusion since acquiring our new cat.

Not that a cat is a small, helpless creature and I don't actually like tiny babies at all, so I think a cat probably fills the toddler/small child niche, providing companionship and amusement, combined with occasional acts of destruction (either deliberate or accidental). :)

When the kids were still at home, the idea of there being just the two of us often seemed a lovely prospect, but to be honest, I think life had become a bit too orderly; we needed something so disturb our routine occasionally.
