Avatar? Worth the trip or not?

I'm still in two minds about going to see Avatar. Whenever I post photos of the local scenery, people always make admiring noises, some even express the desire to live somewhere like this. However, the downside to living somewhere like this is that I have a long journey to a decent cinema. The local one is 40-45 minutes, with just one showing in the evening. The one we usually go to is a 1½ hour drive away (over a high mountain pass that can get closed by snow at this time of year). A three hour round trip, plus movie means at least buying a sandwich and usually we combine it with a meal in the pizza place.

This means that I don't go to see films lightly, unless it's the summer and we just fancy a day going somewhere different for a change of scene, then we're less picky, but to go to see a film at this time of year, it has to be worth it.

Perhaps the fact that I'm vacillating means that Avatar isn't?

On the plus side, people are saying that the special effects are a whole order of magnitude better than previously. It's evoking comparisons with the original Star Wars, which I loved when it first came out and we saw it in the cinema.

On the minus side, there's the Only A White Man Can Lead The Natives To Freedom issue, plus, apparently, a less than stellar script with regard to characterisation and subtlety. (See comments in the review I linked to.)

Either way, I can't go just yet. I'll think about it and see whether it's still on in a week or so's time.
