My rating: 3 of 5 stars
This turned out to be a really good read. Two daughters from a wealthy family find that the law is not on their side when their father dies intestate and they are left homeless and literally penniless. There are many twists and turns before the end and the story shows very clearly the limited options available to women middle-class women at that time. It suffers somewhat from the Victorian notion that good things will come to those who bear their suffering with patience and fortitude whilst those who fight for their rights will be put in their place, but there are some wonderful characters and the story is definitely a good read.
(I actually read the Project Gutenberg ebook.)
