Floppy discs
Floppy discs by Helen in Wales
Floppy discs, a photo by Helen in Wales on Flickr.

42/52 for the group 52 in Twenty Eleven

This week's theme: Words

As part of my ongoing decluttering of the house and garage, I emptied a box that had been lurking in the corner of the conservatory. Amongst the other items was a little pile of 3.5" floppy discs!

It took me right back to Ye Olden Days when computers only had floppy disc drives and you had to insert the program disc and type a command before you could do any word processing.

I still have some floppies hanging around that go in my old Einstein which we keep because we can't bear to throw it away..

I can't really believe how much computers have advanced since those days.

I know it's something of a cliché, but my not-really-a-smartphone is cleverer than the first computers we had.

Me too. I copied off the stuff on them, including old TWP conttibutions! - but nobody wanted them when I punted them up on Ebay.

So off to Computer Aid they go with the rest of the obsolete hardware.

I thought I had disposed of all the floppy discs, but found half a dozen lurking in a box, some with stories on. I think they were just backups of files that were on the hard drive and I have no idea whether they are readable any more, but I do have a floppy disc drive for the Thinkpad, so I will try them before throwing them away.

I have a bunch of those too, and I'm not sure what to do with them. It feels wrong to throw them away. I'll have to find out if there's a place I can recycle them.

I thought I had disposed of all the floppy discs and I have to admit that I just threw them away. I would have preferred to recycle, but didn't know anywhere that did it.

Some of these discs have stories on, according to the labels. I think they were just backups of files that were on the hard drive and I have no idea whether they are readable any more, but I do have a floppy disc drive for the Thinkpad, so I will try them before throwing them away.

I've still got a few of them lying around. I suspect they're probably unreadable now, even I had something to read them with.
