It's been an odd sort of week - Helen's journal and online home

It's been an odd sort of week
Perhaps I was suffering from post-essay ennui? Perhaps it was because G has been ill with horrible 'flu, disrupting my routine by being off work and needing looking after? Whatever it was, I don't seem to have been able to get anything much done all week, other than a bit of laundry and going to my last Welsh class of the year.

Possibly the Welsh class coming to an end has also unsettled me a bit. After attending classes with the same tutor for about 6 years, it was a bit of a shock when she announced that she has decided to leave the college. Things have not been happy in the college where I used to work since it was taken over by a much bigger college and there were a couple of final straws for M, hence her decision. This caused some consternation because we have all tried the other more traditional Welsh courses and found them boring and not conducive to helping us actually speak the language.

However, we hope to continue as a self-help group, with M coming in to work with us from next February onwards. We have negotiated a room in a local pub, which will be free (as long as we buy teas and coffees) and we'll carry on learning the play we have started. (We have the script and a CD of the tutor reading it.) We are all feeling very positive at the moment about carrying on, but of course good intentions don't always work out, so it's all a bit uncertain. However, I've been with the class for four years now and the others have been together for even longer, so there is definitely a good group dynamic.

Anyway, none of this has helped me get my work done. I'm supposed to be marking assignments, but have only done 1 so far. I hadn't even posted my weekly photo from last week, though I've rectified that omission now. I've also just taken one of the photos for this week and had a think about the other theme, so perhaps I'm getting moving again?

The important thing with any language is to find a way of learning that works for you. And I agree, most of the formal Welsh courses are... well, too formal, for a start. I hope the new plan works outs well.

It's a good plan to arrange to meet up somewhere to practise. I was going to suggest that to you until I read you had already thought of it.

That's exactly what happened to our writing group - though it was library based, as opposed to college based. There's just a small core group attending now, but it's nice to go out and hang around with like-minded people...
