Sad news re Iain (M) Banks

There is an old Usenet convention that you never use a person's name in the subject line because you only do that when you announce their death. Well, Iain Banks is still with us, but he has today announced his impending death from cancer.

Damn...

This is not the sort of news I want to find when I switch on my computer at lunch time after a happy morning out at Welsh class. :(

I wouldn't count myself as a huge Banks fan, but I have read and enjoyed many of his books and seen him regularly on panels at SF conventions. He seems like a nice guy, he's younger than me (!) and it seems like far to soon to be bidding him farewell.
