Today I successfully installed some more programs on the new Windows 8 computer and also resolved the issue with the EOS Utility, which I use to download photos from the Canon DSLR camera. I installed it yesterday from the disc, but it wouldn't work and all the options were greyed out. A bit of Googling led to the solution, which was to install an updated version from Canon. So all is good and I went out for a little walk in the gentle drizzle to photograph the primroses I had spotted yesterday.
Behold, some primroses!
This photo is simultaneously all wrong with regard to composition and yet I find it somehow pleasing. If it hadn't been raining, I may have lingered and taken more shots, but I was getting damp. You can see the rain droplets on the petals.
