Wintersmith
New Steeleye Span! Based on Terry Pratchett's Wintersmith!

I heard about this yesterday, courtesy of a friend posting a link on Facebook. After watching the Youtube video and reading the Amazon reviews, I immediately placed an order for the CD, but due to the wonders of the internet, I've been listening to it all morning via Amazon's Cloud Player.

It reminds me very much of classic 1970s Steeleye Span, the overall sound is similar to albums like The Journey. It's also making me want to re-read the Tiffany Aching books, which in my view contain some of Pratchett's very best writing. His descriptions of the chalk country where Tiffany lives are so evocative. And they're funny, of course and there's a very good Nac Mac Feegle song on the album. :)

Current Mood: pleased pleased

They've used elements of the novel really well, but the songs actually stand alone, so it should work even for those who haven't read the book.

I find 'Wintersmith' a work of genius, but then I was born on the chalk myself. :o)

It's a credit to the power of Pratchett's writing that he made that country so real to someone like me who has no links to the area whatsoever. I was born surrounded by the millstone grit of the Pennines and now live near an extinct volcano. :)

The nice thing about having some teaching again is that I can treat myself to a CD without feeling a bit guilty. :)

I've been very much looking forward to this. Peter Knight has been posting things on Facebook for a few weeks now. I love Steeleye (I've seen them play live - twice!) and the Tiffany Aching books are my favorite of Pratchett's works. :)

Thank you for this. I love Steeleye Span and Terry Pratchett's Tiffany Achin. I will share with my Pagan friends on FB, they are all big fans of his.

Your mention of Tiffany reminds me (going backwards through the books) of my favorite: Maskerade. Give me Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg! :o)
