Hazelnuts from the garden - Helen's journal and online home
In which an old dog attempts to learn new tricks.
Hazelnuts from the garden

For years the hazel tree in the front garden has produced nuts, but, disappointingly, when broken open, there was nothing inside. I don't know whether the tree is now sufficiently mature or whether it was due to a decent summer, but this year there were lots of edible nuts! They are rather small, but definitely taste of hazelnut.

Overall it's been an excellent year for the garden, especially considering how little I do in there!

Hazelnuts from the garden

This year we had enough blackberries and jostaberries for jam as well as crumbles and, for the past few weeks, I have had free nuts.

So cool that you "grow your own." I just had toast and delicious blackberry jam for breakfast, funnily enough.

Great! I just came back from a walk in the woods with a pocketful -- about half a pound -- of sweet chestnuts. And that's after the ground had been fairly well picked over by the half-term hordes.

Nothing quite like the produce of one's own estates (however small)! The previous output sounds like a pollination problem to me. (Not that I'm an expert.) Hmm, let me google. The wikipedia entry for hazel mentions that some varieties are grown as pollinators, which suggests that some varieties may not be self-fertile. I wonder if you now have another hazel in pollination distance and that caused the change?

That sounds like a promising development!

Awesome. We have lots of walnut trees around here (north of San Francisco), but I don't know if anyone with hazelnuts. I'll have to ask around some.
