6 July -- Journey down and first evening
We drove to Machynlleth and because we are starting to feel guilty about leaving the vehicle in the car park for several days and taking up a space for all that time, we paid to leave the Daihatsu in the car park of the storage facility just by the station. Work is continuing on the new footbridge, so as before, all trains were leaving from Platform 2.
The journey was good and we arrived at Euston, walked the short distance to Euston Square tube and from there travelled to Aldgate, the nearest tube station to our hotel. G always does the hotel booking and this time he had excelled himself. The hotel had a view! A very splendid view indeed from our room on the 15th floor.
After settling in and exploring the hotel room (the tea making facilities and some of the light switches were cunningly hidden and took some finding!), we walked via Tower Bridge to our favourite pizza restaurant on the South Bank. Everywhere was, as usual, teeming with tourists. I noticed more parties of foreign students (many of them American) than we normally see, though perhaps it's because we were there earlier in the summer this time and schools and colleges hadn't yet finished for the summer break?
Once we'd eaten, we walked on along the South Bank, past the skateboarders in their undercroft and thence across the bridge to Embankment Tube station where we caught the tube back to our hotel.
This walk formed part of my Eowyn challenge journey. I am currently following Frodo and Sam's journey to Mordor and Mount Doom.

Point reached on journey:
Frodo had decided to go on alone to Mordor, but Sam has guessed his plan and reaches the lake as Frodo is leaving. Together they paddle past the south end of Tol Brandir and later hide the boat. They head into the hills and find a sheer, high, impassible cliff overlooking the marshland.
