Grey rainy evening - Helen's journal and online home

Grey rainy evening
The nights are starting to draw out ever so slightly, but not enough to make evening walks suitable for taking decent photos. As I was running out of time for the photo-a-week challenge, this will have to do.

3/52 for the group 2016 Weekly Alphabet Challenge

This week's theme was: C is for Crop

By the time I went out for a walk yesterday, it was starting to rain. I took two photos, but they were both terrible straight out of the phone. This has now been straightened and I removed a couple of intruding twigs from the foreground before giving it a slight crop and turning it to monochrome to give a mysterious look.

Grey rainy evening

And I was rather soggy by the time I got home, so it was straight into the shower and a complete change of clothes before making dinner.

Wonderful result! That captures our weather perfectly - everything in shades of grey and black, and the rain coming in...

I'd tried to cheer the other photo up by brightening it, but because it was taken with my phone, the auto setting had boosted the ISO so it was slightly fuzzy. This was very obvious when looking at the 3 sheep in the picture. I know sheep are fuzzy blobs, but not that fuzzy!

In this photo, the slight fuzziness somehow adds to the atmosphere.

How beautiful!

Thanks. I did enjoy the walk, even if I ended up rather soggy at the end.

I really like this picture! It does leave me curious about the colors, though.

The only colour in the original was the dark green of the grass in the foreground. Everything else was grey!

Interesting! I don't think our hills are ever grey.

The foreground is a grassy field, therefore green, but the two small hills in the middle distance are thickly covered in deciduous trees, currently leafless, so they're grey. The next hill is actually heather, grass and bracken, but everything is currently dead and brown, so by the time it's viewed at twilight through a falling rain, it looks grey. The distant mountain is made up of rocky crags and screen slopes, thus grey! It would look much less grey in summer with a blue sky, but even so, there is a lot of grey around. So pretty! Our hills here are all covered with conifers, so they're dark green year-round, but it can be a greyish green on a cloudy day. I lived in the San Francisco area for a while, and there the hills are bright green from fall to spring, and yellow-brown from spring to fall.

What a dramatic looking photo, I really like it!

It is starting to get dark later here now also, I love it :-)
