Ysgol Haf / Summer School
I'm at a Welsh language course this week. This morning was hard and we were doing things that I can't really do in my native language (learning songs orally without the words and music to look at) and trying to write down words of a song as it is played. I nearly ended up in tears, but after talking to the tutor at lunch time and explaining my problems, decided to stay for the afternoon. Fortunately things were much better this afternoon and we were doing things I could cope with, so I will stay with that class and not move down a level.

Current Mood: stressed stressed

When I took a Welsh class (in the U.S.), we learned that Welsh is very often taught in Wales without letting the students see things written down. Maybe because that's the more natural way for small children to learn a language? It doesn't work for me.

French is the second language that I know best, and when I hear a sentence in French I immediately picture it written out. Once I can mentally read the words, then I know what it says (or not, if I don't know all the vocabulary). It's not that I have to add in a "translate into English" step, I just need a "see it in print" step. Maybe I learned to read too early!
