On the one hand I don't want to set up something so rigid that I start saying, "I'm sorry, but I can't go out for the day on Thursday because that's when I change the beds and scrub the floors." (I have known people who did that sort of thing and got totally hung up on their self-imposed routine.) On the other hand, if I forget about the house and just do fun stuff all the time, we end up living in dust and clutter.
At the moment I'm experimenting with grey dailies with checklists. Each checklist item is 15 minutes of cleaning or a pomodoro of decluttering. As long as I do them all during the week, it doesn't matter if I do one or two a day or have a big cleaning binge twice a week. So far it's really helping but I'll need to see whether it keeps working long term.
