No plans to move virtual home
I will be sorry to lose those of you who feel that you can't accept the new LJ TOS because they're in Russian or because you perceive something untoward in them, however, I don't like Dreamwidth and have no intention of moving there. I'll stick it out here until LJ folds or there are no English speaking people left that I want to read.

The people who I occasionally see face-to-face at conventions etc have all been added to my Facebook friends (not that I like Facebook much), so I won't lose touch with you if you go. There is just one person who I would miss and who I don't see on Facebook, so I will look in on DW occasionally, but just to read and comment, not to post. At the moment, I haven't found a suitable replacement for LJ. As I said, there's something about DW, which just sets my teeth on edge. Largely irrational, I know, but there it is. Perhaps I'll do more with my Tumblr account or get more involved with Blogger and G+ again, but for the moment I'm just going to carry on carrying on.

Current Mood: determined determined

I'm staying too!

Hurrah! I can perhaps understand why American LJer's might feel that they only want to deal with US owned sites, but from my point of view as a Brit, LJ has always been foreign owned.

I've seen these flits from LJ at regular intervals since I joined 11 years ago, but to be honest I can't see why a sudden unannounced change of the conditions of service (irritating as it may be) is more unacceptable from LJ than when Mark Zuckerberg does it, as he frequently does, without prompting any mass exodus from Facebook. LJ is much more valuable to me than FB, at any rate.

Same I thought. Frome the moment we entered the .com-world we have known this

Same here! I've lost one person that I really hate to see go, but that's life.

I've lost a couple of friends, but also gained a couple! Things change. Things move on. This latest fuss will die down.

As you know, I'm very happy to hear this, and I feel exactly the same way.

If LJ ever does go under, I'm sure I'll continue blogging somewhere else ... but it absolutely will not be at Dreamwidth.

I feel the same about Dreamwidth. It's too scolding auntie, "I know what's good for you."

That's a good description. Mark (above) has an epic rant somewhere, he should paste it in here!

Are we connected on Facebook? I'd like to stay in touch. I'm concerned about elements of the terms of service with regard to writing, so that's why I'm going. But I had been mirroring my blog on LJ, so if you want to track my WordPress blog, I'm at joycereynoldsward.com.
heleninwales From: heleninwales Date: April 6th, 2017 09:57 am (UTC) (Link)
I don't think we are connected on Facebook. You are one of the writers I would miss, so I've noted your WordPress blog address.

As there are umpty-million Helen Hall's on Facebook, I'll see if I can find you and put in a friend request.

I'm not on DW or Facebook, and will be staying with LJ.

The new terms of service didn't seem any more terrifying than any other website's terms of service - but then I never do quite manage to scroll all the way down to the bottom of any TOS without my eyes glazing over...

heleninwales From: heleninwales Date: April 6th, 2017 09:59 am (UTC) (Link)
I'm sure I have signed away my firstborn's life many times over by failing to scroll to the bottom of TOSs! :)

I really don't understand this panic. PayPal frequently send notices about change to the TOS and presumably I have to agree to access my account, so I can't see what's different about this.

I've disliked DW from its inception, but I've gone ahead and imported my journal over there anyway, and I'll read and comment over there as well as here--but I'm staying here too.

What prompted me was, I guess, a sense that LJ was *trying* to alienate its English users. That just didn't seem to bode well for the future. But this is my home; this is where I come online, and I'll keep posting here and reading here until they close shop.

I'm so pleased you are continuing to use LJ.

I have one or two friends who have reason to be wary, but I'm becoming increasingly concerned about the desire to paint Russia as evil. I know there are lots of bad things that happen there, but as a Brit I currently feel ashamed of my country and there would be too much of pot, kettle, black and motes and beams to be overly critical of Russia.

I am here for nearly more than 10 years now. Some of the people of "my beginning" are still here, most of those don't post regularly here. I have FB too but reduced my post there and delete every now and than all I have done (I have an "eraserprogramm"). For my hiking and out'nabout posts I have Wordpress but only in german.I always found a way to keep in touch with people interest me and which are interested in me. Thank You for staying.

I don't mind DW, but sadly most of my communities are here so there's just not as much activity there. I plan to stay here until I can't.
jhetley From: jhetley Date: April 5th, 2017 07:32 pm (UTC) (Link)
I'll continue to read here, with cross-posting from DW because a number of professional friends/associates are dumping LJ. I can't say I really like "social media" in general or either of these sites in particular.
heleninwales From: heleninwales Date: April 6th, 2017 10:06 am (UTC) (Link)
One of the reasons I won't move to DW is because I spend too much time on social media as it is. I'm not prepared to add another site.
lab_jazz From: lab_jazz Date: April 6th, 2017 01:17 am (UTC) (Link)
We don't really know each other, but like you I have no interest in exporting my Journal to DW.
I remember the situation on LJ when DW was set up and who those people are who set it up. I don't want anything to do with it.

If I end up being the last person left on LJ I'll turn out the light as I exit the room.
heleninwales From: heleninwales Date: April 6th, 2017 10:09 am (UTC) (Link)
I'm glad I'm not the only person to have serious issues with Dreamwidth. I do have a tendency to hang on to things to the bitter end before finally moving on, so it looks like you and me will be turning out the lights together. :)

I've been here for 13 years now, and am very sad to see the changes to the ToS.

I have a Dreamwidth journal and plan to crosspost. Only because I fear that, at some point, there either won't be an LJ, or something else will happen and I won't be able to get all my entries and comments out at that time.

I still plan to hang around here, though, and comment as I have time.
heleninwales From: heleninwales Date: April 6th, 2017 10:08 am (UTC) (Link)
I'm not a betting person, but I would be prepared to bet that LJ will outlast DW. Of course I could be wrong -- I often am! -- but it makes sense to have a backup either way. Personally, I keep an offline backup on my own computer using ljArchive, so I'll stay here and if necessary move to Tumblr or Blogger or wherever is available if LJ eventually dies.
lizziebelle From: lizziebelle Date: April 6th, 2017 10:58 am (UTC) (Link)
I signed up for DW years ago because I didn't want to lose everything I posted here, along with all my friends who were going there. I only ever use it to back up my LJ.

You're welcome to connect with me on FB if you like. If you add /lizziebelle to the FB url, you should find me. :)

I'm definitely not keen on a ToS that explicitly says the binding version is in a language I can't read, or that makes any content I create subject to Russia's bigoted LGBT laws. Not to mention that I'm hearing stories of previously-private content suddenly becoming no-private recently. And images in some of my old entries have vanished mysteriously...

I won't close down my account until and unless everyone I read migrates elsewhere, but I will stop cross-posting from Dreadwidth (where my primary account has been since they started up).

heleninwales From: heleninwales Date: April 6th, 2017 04:19 pm (UTC) (Link)
I can see that, due to what they post, some people are understandably unhappy about the ToS, but I will not move to Dreamwidth and in fact decided today that I would delete my account there. I only created it during a point some years ago when it looked as though LJ was going to fold.

Facebook is appalling in many ways, as is Twitter, so for the moment I'm staying with LJ and taking a "wait and see" approach.
