Rory's story cubes
26/52 for the group 2017 Weekly Alphabet Challenge

This week's them was: Z is for a Zillion

There are a zillion story ideas in Rory's story cubes. Each cube has six images on it and there are 9 cubes in total. But each image may spark different ideas, so from over 10 million possible combinations of images, you can create a zillion stories!

Rory's story cubes

G went to a conference in Liverpool on adult literacy and numeracy and someone who actually knew the Rory who devised these story cubes was talking about how successful they had been in helping people with creativity and writing short stories. I thought they sounded just the think for practising writing in Welsh. Because they are images and not words, they can be used equally well in any language. Also there is no "right" interpretation of the images. It's whatever they bring to mind when you look at them.

I use them sometimes :)

The stories don't always work, though.

I can't see myself using them to write serious stories, but in order to practise writing in Welsh, I need something to write about and my life is not exactly exciting. There's only so many times you can write: "I got up just after 7 a.m. I had breakfast then switched on the computer to check my email...."

The advantage of using the cubes is that it gives me the opportunity to write silly random things and not even worry whether the plot makes sense.

Rory who invented them is Irish, so though they've spread to the UK, until now they've been made by a very small group. I believe that they have been taken over by a larger game company, so they might market them further afield now.

I've actually seem those story cubes in a shop here in Perth. I thought that they looked really good, and if my children had have still been young I would have bought them.

The ones that I saw were packed in a square tin.

There are a few different packs available. I bought the basic set which came in this little box which in turn came in a cardboard sleeve, but you can get extra cubes for different genres, such as detective stories, SF, horror etc. There are also larger versions of the cubes.

I thought so too. I can't see me using it for serious stories, but as inspiration for silly little stories to practise writing in Welsh, they seem to be working well.
