Welsh progress update - Helen's journal and online home
In which an old dog attempts to learn new tricks.
Welsh progress update
I went to the Welsh conversation group on Wednesday and we had a good chat. I'm also just about keeping on target with the book reading (Pwnc Llosg) but I'm doing fine with my goal of spending at least 3/4 of an hour each day doing a variety of activities to improve my Welsh.

And I felt really pleased with myself today because I went into the butchers and bought two lamb burgers entirely in Welsh! Yay!

Supermarkets are no good for practising speaking, but the butchers is the old fashioned type of shop where you have to ask for what you want. I'm hoping the burgers are nice because for various reasons, I would like to start buying my meat there instead of the Co-op. It's not that there's anything wrong with the Co-op's meat, but there is less and less choice in actual, unmessed about with meat these days. The ready meals and meat soaked in marinade or covered in barbecue seasoning are pushing out the actual plain meat and, what is more, they come in so much packaging. The burgers from the butcher just came in a thin plastic bag, not in a substantial plastic tray.

Good for you! I'm impressed!

And yep, I'm always looking for good (less processed) meat markets. Alas, the only one near me is not so near me, but I do try to get there as often as I can.

Years ago I bought all our meat from a traditional butchers, but then the old butcher retired and the shop closed and I got a new job and was working some distance from home. By the time I'd driven back from work, all the shops in the town square had closed and only the supermarket was still open. But now I'm retired, I have time to shop during the day, so I'd like to buying meat from local sources again.

I am fed up on being stuck on the plateau of knowing a lot of Welsh but not being able to use it happily in real life. Of course I've recently retired, so it's also a feeling of "now or never". At last I have enough time to devote to studying and practising and if I can just get a bit better, then watching TV and reading books will become a pleasure instead of hard work. TV has just about reached that point and the reading is improving.

The best butcher shop I've been to was a kosher one in Oakland, California. The chicken they sold there tasted _so_ different from supermarket chicken - almost like butter made flesh.

The lamb burgers from the butcher were definitely nicer than the quality supermarket ones and no more expensive. I will definitely buy from there again.
